Box Score BLUFFTON, Ohio — Marietta College couldn't overcome a 2-0 halftime deficit as the Pioneers lost a 2-1 decision at Bluffton University Saturday (Sept. 13) afternoon in women's soccer.
Bluffton (1-3 overall) struck with lightning quickness when Terrill Webb found the back of the net just 39 seconds into the match. Kristen Tropf picked up the first of her two assists on the goal. The Beavers made it 2-0 in the 38th minute when Jo Bondra scored with an assist from Tropf.
Marietta (0-6 overall) was aggressive on offense all match collecting an incredible 14 offsides calls. When the Pioneers did get a shot off in the first half, Bluffton keeper Katie Neeley was there to make the save. Neeley finished with six saves in the match including four in the opening period.
The Pioneers cut the Beaver lead in half early in the second period. Freshman
Alexis McKenzie (Lancaster/Bloom Carroll), back in the lineup after missing the last three matches with an injury, notched her first career goal in the 49th minute. Sophomore
Elle Sage (Cuyahoga Falls/Cuyahoga Falls) had the assist.
Marietta's defense turned up the pressure in the second half and limited the Beavers to just three shots. Pioneer keeper
Rebecca Tenney (Pepper Pike/Orange) recorded six saves in the match.
The Pioneers outshot Bluffton 14-12, but the Beavers held a 4-0 advantage in corner kicks.
