Box Score BLUFFTON, Ohio — A pair of late goals lifted Bluffton University to a 4-3 win over Marietta College Saturday (Sept. 13) afternoon in men's soccer action. The loss drops Marietta to 2-2 on the season, while Bluffton improves to 1-4 overall.
Bluffton's Peter Carlson nailed the game winner in the 86th minute to complete the hat trick. Carlson scored twice in the first half.
The teams traded goals in the first half with the Pioneers claiming a 3-2 lead at halftime. Senior
Boyd Kirk (Akron/Green) scored his first goal of the season in the fifth minute off an assist from junior
Luke Saunders (Groveport/Groveport Madison).
Carlson answered for the Beavers in the 18th minute with an assist from Grant Stutzman.
Wesley Riley (Marietta/Marietta), Marietta's leading scorer, tallied his fifth goal of the season in the 26th minute.
Carlson tied the match at 2-2 with his second goal at the 44:34 mark. Appiah Adubofour had the assist. Bluffton appeared to have the momentum headed into halftime, but Pioneer freshman
Trenton Walty (Lebanon/Bishop Fenwick) grabbed the lead back with just four seconds left on the clock. Walty's unassisted goal was the first of his collegiate career.
Neither team mounted much of an offensive attack in the first 20 minutes of the second half. Bluffton finally got the equalizer in the 78th minute on an unassisted goal from Blake Drewes setting the stage for Carlson's game winner.
Freshman
Eric Pierce (Marietta/) went the distance in goal for the Pioneers and made four saves. Bluffton split the match with Nate Otto playing the first half and Jeff Yoder the second. Otto had one save, while Yoder made four.
For the match, Marietta outshot Bluffton 16-12 and held a slim edge in corner kicks, 6-4.
