Box Score 2 MARIETTA, Ohio — Marietta College blanked the College of Wooster 3-0 Sunday (Aug. 31) afternoon in men's soccer action to claim the 30th annual Marietta Soccer Classic championship. The Pioneers are off to a 2-0 start for the first time in over 15 years.
A trio of local products led the Pioneers over Wooster. Freshman
Peter Keiser (Vienna, W.Va./Parkersburg Catholic) scored the game-winning goal in the 17th minute. Keiser tallied his first collegiate goal when he created a one-on-one with the Scot keeper and scored from 10 yards out.
Freshman
Eric Pierce (Marietta/) made his collegiate debut in goal for the Pioneers and posted the clean sheet for his first career shutout. Pierce made four saves in the match. Senior
Wesley Riley (Marietta/Marietta) put the match away with a pair of second half goals. Keiser picked up an assist on Riley's second goal of the match.
Helping Pierce post the shutout, Marietta's back line kept the Wooster attack in check. Seniors
Boyd Kirk (Akron/Green) and
Dragan Mijatovic (Akron/Coventry) and freshmen
Tyler Bro (Parkersburg, W.Va./) and Alec Schuerman started in the back for the Pioneers, while senior
Scott Eilmann (North Royalton/North Royalton) and freshman
Robert Felton (Wheeling, W.Va./The Linsly School) provided depth.
The Pioneers outshot Wooster 14-9, while the Fighting Scots held a slim 4-3 advantage in corner kicks. Zach Jergan recorded two saves in net for Wooster.
In the consolation match, Piedmont College defeated Bethany College 2-0.
Marietta hits the road next week for a pair of matches in the Methodist University Soccer Kicks Cancer Invitational. The Pioneers play Methodist on Saturday (Sept. 6) at 2:00 p.m. and Averett University on Sunday (Sept. 7) at 11:00 a.m.
