Box Score 2 GETTYSBURG, Pa. — Marietta College opened the 2014 season with a pair of volleyball matches in the Gettysburg College Battlefield Classic Friday (Aug. 29). Gallaudet University and Eastern University both defeated the Pioneers 3-0.
Gallaudet swept Marietta 25-22, 25-22 and 25-21. Juniors
Kennedy Clyde (Chagrin Falls/Hawken School) and
Shauntiel Oliver-Smith (Elyria/Elyria) led the Pioneer attack with nine kills apiece. Freshman
Erica Denallo (Independence/Independence) added seven kills in her collegiate debut.
Junior libero
Mary Ervin (Lewis Center/Olentangy Orange) had a team-best 12 digs, while Clyde added 10. Senior setter
Laura Mauer (Terre Haute, Ind./North) dished out 28 assists.
In the second match of the day, Eastern posted set scores of 25-18, 25-20 and 25-20 for the victory. Clyde paced Marietta with 11 kills and 13 digs. Oliver-Smith and junior
Devin Walter (Indianapolis, Ind./Southport) each chipped in with five kills.
Sophomore
Julia Moskaluk (Copley/Revere) notched 13 digs, while Ervin had nine. Mauer piloted the Marietta attack with 19 assists.
Marietta wraps up play in the Battlefield Classic with two matches on Saturday (Aug. 30). The Pioneers play McDaniel College at 10:00 a.m. and Messiah College at 12:00 p.m.
