Box Score MARIETTA, Ohio – Sophomore Eddie Grenert recorded his first career double-double leading Marietta College to a 94-87 victory against John Carroll University Saturday (Feb. 22) in Ban Johnson Arena. Grenert finished with a career-high 21 points and 10 rebounds off the bench.
The Pioneers (19-6 overall, 14-4 OAC) will be the No. 2 seed in next week's Ohio Athletic Conference Tournament. Marietta receives a double bye and will play at home in the semifinals on Thursday (Feb. 27) at 7:30 p.m.
John Carroll (15-10, overall, 9-9 OAC) jumped out to an early 13-2 lead and led by 12 points, 29-17, midway through the first half. The Blue Streaks took a 47-39 advantage into halftime.
Marietta cut the deficit to a single point several times in the second half only to see the Blue Streaks push the margin back to four or five. Junior A.J. davis drained a three-pointer with 8:22 remaining to give Marietta its first lead of the game, 72-71.
Davis' trey started a 10-0 Pioneer run that changed a two-point deficit into an eight-point lead, 79-71, with 6:34 left on the clock. A pair of free throws from
Andy Dollman (Vienna, W.Va./Parkersburg) put MC up by 12 points, 91-79, with 41 seconds remaining.
In addition to Grenert's 21 points,
Luis Garcia (Miami, Fla./Florida Christian) hit four three-pointers and finished with 17 points. Freshman
Keith Richardson (Englewood/Northmont) scored 15 points, while Dollman chipped in with 13 points and four assists. Sophomore
RaNeal Ewing (Westerville/Dublin Scioto) added 10 points.
David Linane scored 19 points for John Carroll. Tim Ludlow scored 13 points and Joey Vuyancih added 12 points and six assists. Jake Hollinger notched a double-double with 10 points and 11 rebounds. He also blocked four shots.
After being outrebounded 22-15 in the first half, Marietta ended up winning the battle of the boards, 36-35. The Pioneers turned the ball over just seven times while forcing 12 JCU miscues.
For the game, Marietta shot 48.5% (33-of-68) from the floor, 35.7% (10-of-28) from three-point range and 90.0% (18-of-20) at the line. John Carroll was 31-of-64 (48.4%) from the floor, 9-of-19 (47.4%) from behind the arc and 16-of-19 (84.2%) at the line.
