Box Score COLUMBUS, Ohio – Marietta College dropped a 75-55 decision at Capital University Wednesday (Feb. 12) evening. With the loss, the Pioneers now trail Ohio Athletic Conference leader Mount Union by two games in the league standings.
Marietta is currently 17-5 overall and 12-3 in the OAC. Mount Union sits atop the standings with a 14-1 OAC record.
Capital (10-12 overall, 7-8 OAC) controlled the game from the opening tip. Marietta struggled from the floor in the first half and was ice cold from three-point range all night. The Pioneers shot just 28.1% from the floor in the opening period and trailed the Crusaders 39-26 at the break.
Marietta warmed up a little in the second half, but the lack of three-pointers prevented the Pioneers from making up halftime deficit. Capital dominated the boards, 44-28, allowing Marietta just six second-chance points in the game.
Only two Pioneers reached double figures in scoring.
Luis Garcia (Miami, Fla./Florida Christian) led Marietta with 18 points off the bench.
RaNeal Ewing (Westerville/Dublin Scioto) finished with 12 points.
AJ Dixon, who drained a half-court three-pointer at the buzzer before halftime, led Capital with 15 points. Curt Geise and Andrew Bolka each scored 14 points. Bolka had a double-double with 11 rebounds. Ben Jackson grabbed a game-high 12 boards for the Crusaders.
For the game, Marietta shot 33.9% (20-of-59) from the floor, 13.6% (3-of-22) from three-point range, and 80.0% (12-of-15) at the line. Capital was 27-of-54 (50.0%) from the floor, 6-of-16 (37.5%) behind the arc, 15-of-22 (68.2%) at the line.
