NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. — The Marietta College men's basketball team led start to finish as the Pioneers defeated Westminster College by the score of 87-69 Saturday (Nov. 29) afternoon. The Pioneers remain perfect on the season with a 5-0 record. Westminster slips to 2-4 overall.
Junior
Eddy Grenert (Wooster/Triway) led five Pioneers in double figures with a game-high 18 points. Junior
Luis Garcia (Miami, Fla./Florida Christian) scored 17 points, while freshman
Dillon Young (Laurelville/Logan Elm) and senior
Garrett Stephenson (West Milton/Milton-Union) scored 12 and 11 points, respectively. Senior
Andy Dollman (Vienna, W.Va./Parkersburg) finished with 10 points.
Grenert and Stephenson each pulled down seven rebounds and sophomore
Jack Thome (Chagrin Falls/Chagrin Falls) came off the bench to grab six caroms.
Dollman drained a three-pointer on the opening possession of the game as the Pioneers raced out to an early 12-4 lead. Marietta pushed the margin to as many as 15 points, 45-30, on back-to-back dunks by Grenert and Dollman with 1:48 left in the first half. The Pioneers led 45-33 at the break.
Westminster opened the second half with a 9-3 run to cut the deficit to six points, 48-42, with 16:53 left in the game. Marietta responded with six straight points and never looked back. A layup by
Tim Williams (Gibsonia, Pa./Pine-Richland) with 3:32 left gave the Pioneers their biggest lead of the game, 85-61.
For the game, Marietta shot 43.0% (34-of-79) from the floor, 30.3% (10-of-33) from three-point range and 81.8% (9-of-11) at the free throw line. Westminster was 25-of-53 (47.2%) from the floor, 5-of-16 (31.3%) behind the arc and 14-of-24 (58.3%) at the line.
Marietta forced 15 Titan turnovers, while committing eight. The Pioneers outrebounded Westminster 43-33.
Marietta opens Ohio Athletic Conference play on Wednesday (Dec. 3) when the Pioneers travel to rival Muskingum University. Tip off is set for 7:30 p.m.
