Women's Basketball set to host 30th annual Turkey Shoot

MARIETTA, Ohio — For the Marietta College women's basketball team Thanksgiving means the 30th annual Jim Meagle Turkey Shoot. The tournament, sponsored by BSN Sports, begins Saturday (Nov. 29) and concludes Sunday.

The Turkey Shoot will begin with a high school game featuring Fairland High School and Waterford High School at 12:00 p.m. on Saturday. Rounding out the high school play is Belpre High School and Caldwell High School at 5:00 p.m.

Marietta and Miami University Middletown will mark the start of the college tournament playing at 2:30 p.m. Denison University and Carnegie Melon University will follow at 7:30 p.m. wrapping up day one. Sunday will hold two games with the consolation match-up at 1:00 p.m. and the championship game at 3:00 p.m.

The Pioneers, led by third-year head coach Stacia Shrider, will begin the weekend with an overall record of 2-1. The team will look to claim their 15th Turkey Shoot Title.

This year, senior Jessica Borgan leads the pioneers in points per game, averaging 13.0. Brogan also leads the team in rebounds averaging 8.7 per game.

Seniors Candice Alexander (Fairborn/Fairborn) and Heather Booth (Newport/Frontier) enter the weekend with a double figure scoring average. Alexander averages 12.0 points per outing, while Booth is scoring 10.3 ppg. Booth also averages 5.0 rebounds per game.

Rounding out the starters for Marietta will most likely be sophomore Emily Sabatino (Morgantown, W.Va./Morgantown) and freshman Laura Frazee (Fresno/Ridgewood). Sabatino has started all three games this season at the point and averages 3.3 ppg. Frazee has started at center each game and averages 7.0 ppg and 4.3 rebounds.

Miami University Middletown enters the tournament under the leadership of first-year head coach David Hall with an overall record of 3-3.

The ThunderHawks are led by 6-foot-2 junior forward Riian McCray-Smith and freshman guard Jordan Cochrane. McCray-Smith enters the Turkey Shoot averaging a double-double with 16.5 points and 16.3 rebounds per game. Cochrane is scoring 10.8 ppg.

Carnegie Melon University is led by fourth-year head coach Jacquie Hullah. The Tartans hold an overall record of 5-1.

Sophomore center Lisa Murphy is one of three Tartans averaging in double figures. Murphy is scoring 20.7 points and pulling down 9.5 boards per outing. Fellow sophomore Jackie Hudepohl and junior Lindsay Poss average 12.8 and 10.5 points, respectively. Both are averaging 8.2 rebounds.

Denison University's head coach Sara Lee, in her 26th season, brings her team into the tournament with an overall record of 1-3.

Junior Kellie Arter is the team's top scorer at 10.3 points per game, followed by sophomore Jordan Holmes with 8.8 ppg. The 6-foot-1 Holmes leads the team at the post with 13.8 rebounds per game and 6.2 blocks.
