COLUMBUS, Ohio — Capital University scored less than three minutes into the match and never looked back as the Crusaders defeated Marietta College by the score of 5-1 Wednesday (Oct. 22) afternoon in men's soccer. Capital improves to 9-5-1 overall and 4-1-1 in the Ohio Athletic Conference. The Pioneers slip to 5-9 on the season and 3-3 in the OAC.
R.G. Florey created some space for himself just outside the box to get a shot off. His shot to the far post found the back of the net for a 1-0 Capital lead in the third minute. The Crusaders cushioned their lead in the 39th minute when Alexander Basiakos sent a cross into the box where Cheyn Roux slipped the ball past the Marietta keeper.
Capital struck again early in the second period. Basiakos again sent a cross into the box. This time Cameron Bryant was on the receiving end and headed the ball over the keeper for a 3-0 lead. Josh Spaw headed in a corner kick from Jacob Pulliam in the 66th minute.
Marietta finally got on the scoreboard in the 87th minute.
Josh Albright (Martin/St. Francis de Sales) took possession of a loose ball in the box and quickly passed the ball to
Clayton Cowgill (Alliance/Marlington). Cowgill tapped the ball in for his first goal of the season.
The Crusaders added an insurance goal with less than a minute remaining in the match. Jacob Kovacs took control of a rebound off the post and tapped it in for the goal.
Both teams split the match in goal. Marietta started
Eric Pierce (Marietta) who had three saves in the first half.
Tyler Sholl (Johnstown/Big Walnut) made a pair of saves in the second 45 minutes. Trevor Funk started in goal for Capital and didn't have any saves in the first half. Justin Niswonger played the second period and made three daves.
Capital outshot the Pioneers 21-8 for the match. The Crusaders also held a 7-1 edge in corner kicks.
Marietta returns home to host Heidelberg University on Saturday (Oct. 25) at 1:00 p.m. The Pioneers will honor their seven seniors prior to the match with the Student Princes.
