Crusaders slip by Women's Basketball 74-72

Box Score COLUMBUS, Ohio – Capital University converted seven of eight free throw attempts in the final 27 seconds to pull out a 74-72 come from behind victory over Marietta College Wednesday (Jan. 22) evening in women's basketball. The Crusaders improve to 9-6 overall and 6-3 in the Ohio Athletic Conference. Marietta drops to 8-8 and 2-7 in league play.

Following an opening bucket by Capital, the Pioneers scored eight straight points to lead 8-2 with 14:19 left in the first half. A layup from freshman Morgan Liedtke (Lowell/Fort Frye) with 1:38 remaining gave Marietta an 11-point lead, 30-19.

The Crusaders answered with a 7-0 run to finish the opening period. Marietta led 30-26 at the break.

Capital hit four of its first five shots to start the second half and tied the game at 35 on a three-pointer from Jenna Erwin. MC answered right back going on a 12-4 run to push the margin back to eight points, 47-39, with 13:01 left in the game.

Taking advantage of a couple Pioneer turnovers, the Crusaders chipped away at the Marietta lead. Erwin drained a three-pointer at the 8:12 mark to give Capital its first lead of the game, 52-51.

Neither team could take control of the game as the lead bounced back and forth the rest of the way. Candice Alexander (Fairborn/Fairborn) sank a jumper with 4 seconds left to put the Pioneers in front, 69-67. But a pair of late turnovers forced Marietta to foul the Crusaders down the stretch and Capital converted at the line to secure the victory.

Alexander led the Pioneers with 19 points. She also grabbed eight rebounds. Junior Jessica Brogan (Cincinnati/Anderson) hit a career-high four three-pointers and finished with 14 points. Heather Booth (Newport/Frontier) added 12 points and Sierra Sigman (Chillicothe/Zane Trace) pulled down a game-best 10 rebounds.

Erwin led all scorers with 25 points off the bench for Capital. Erwin was 5-of-8 from behind the arc. Jamie Caton chipped in with 12 points, while Cookie Geroski had seven boards.

Marietta outrebounded the Crusaders 43-34. However, the Pioneers committed 20 turnovers that led to 22 Capital points. Capital turned the ball over just 10 times.

For the game, Marietta shot 47.4% (27-of-57) from the floor, 33.3% (6-of-18) from three-point range and 60.0% (12-of-20) at the free throw line. Capital was 22-of-60 (36.7%) from the floor, 6-of-17 (35.3%) behind the arc and 24-of-32 (75.0%) at the line.
