Box Score UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS, Ohio – Marietta College outscored John Carroll University 11-2 over the final five minutes en route to a 78-70 Ohio Athletic Conference victory Saturday (Jan. 18) afternoon.
Sophomore
RaNeal Ewing (Westerville/Dublin Scioto) scored six of his game-high 19 points in that final run as the Pioneers improved to 11-4 on the season and 6-2 in the OAC. Ewing notched his second double-double of the season with 10 rebounds.
Marietta took advantage of several JCU turnovers to take an early 19-8 lead five minutes into the game. The Blue Streaks committed 10 first-half turnovers and trailed by seven, 41-34, at the break.
The Pioneers started the second half strong and equaled their biggest lead of the game at 12 points, 47-35, just over a minute into the second period. John Carroll chipped away at the Pioneer lead and a three-pointer from David Hendrickson tied the game at 58 with 8:46 remaining.
Marietta responded with a 9-2 run to retake the lead, 67-60, but the Blue Streaks refused to go away quietly. John Carroll scored the next eight points to claim the lead for the first time, 68-67, on a pair of free throws from Noah Bidar with 4:56 left on the clock.
Following a Pioneer turnover, junior
Andy Dollman (Vienna, W.Va./Parkersburg) stole the ball right back.
Andy Stegman (Wheelersburg/Wheelersburg) was fouled and hit one of two free throws to knot the game at 68. After a couple of missed shots from both teams, junior
Brennan McKean (Jeromesville/Northwestern) grabbed an offensive rebound and then drained a three-pointer putting Marietta in front for good.
In addition to Ewing's 19 points, McKean hit three treys and finished with 14 points. Dollman chipped in with 10 points, while
Eddy Grenert (Wooster/Triway) scored nine.
Jake Hollinger led the Blue Streaks with 18 points, seven rebounds and five blocked shots. Hendrickson finished with 12 points and four steals, while Joey Vuyancih and Dan Hennessey each grabbed seven rebounds.
Marietta won the battle of the boards 43-38. The Pioneers finished with 17 turnovers, while John Carroll committed 16 turnovers.
For the game, Marietta shot 42.1% (24-of-57) from the floor, 31.6% (6-of-19) from three-point range and 75.0% (24-of-32) at the free throw line. John Carroll was 26-of-63 (41.3%) from the floor, 4-of-22 (18.2%) behind the arc and 14-of-25 (56.0%) at the line.
