Women's Basketball falls at home for the first time this season

Box Score MARIETTA, Ohio – The University of Mount Union defeated Marietta College by the score of 71-60 Wednesday (Jan. 15) evening in Ohio Athletic Conference women's basketball action. Both teams are now 8-6 overall and 2-5 in league play.

Trading buckets through the first 12 minutes of action, neither team led by more than four points. Following a Heather Booth (Newport/Frontier) jumper that put the Pioneers in front 17-15 with 8:59 left in the first half, Mount Union went on a 7-0 run to take the lead for good.

The Purple Raiders led by as many as nine points, 35-26, in the first half.  Two free throws from Colleen Kennehan in the final minute gave Mount Union an eight-point lead, 37-29, at the half.

Marietta cut the deficit to seven, 44-37, early in the second half but could get no closer. Mount Union extended the lead to as many as 20 points and then held off a late Pioneer rally for the win.

Marietta junior Candice Alexander (Fairborn/Fairborn) led all scorers with a career-high 24 points. Booth finished with 12 points and Jessica Brogan (Cincinnati/Anderson) grabbed a team-best 10 rebounds.

Chandler Moore and Annie Bova each scored 14 points to lead Mount Union. Sarah Grippi added nine points and 11 rebounds.

The Purple Raiders outrebounded Marietta 44-39 and forced 15 Pioneer turnovers. Mount Union committed 14 turnovers in the game.

For the game, Marietta shot 34.5% (19-of-55) from the floor, 16.7% (2-of-12) behind the arc and 69.0% (20-of-29) at the free throw line.  Mount Union was 24-of-60 (40.0%) from the floor, 8-of-26 (30.8%) from three-point range and 15-of-21 (71.4%) at the line.
