Box Score MARIETTA, Ohio – Marietta College swept Transylvania University (Ky.) 3-0 in the final match of the 2013 BSN River City Classic volleyball tournament Sunday (Sept. 8) afternoon.

Mary Ervin (Lewis Center/Olentangy Orange) was named the Most Valuable Defensive Player of the tournament, while junior setter
Laura Mauer (Terre Haute, Ind./North) was named to the all-tournament team.
The battle of the Pioneers was one of the closest matches of the tournament as Marietta (4-4 overall) defeated Transylvania; also know as the Pioneers, by the scores of 25-23, 26-24 and 25-23. Transylvania (5-3 overall) led in all three sets but couldn't hold on for the set win.
Marietta used a balanced attack on offense and controlled the net on defense. Senior
Paige DeVriendt (Bowling Green/Bowling Green) and junior
Rachel Hackenberg (Canal Winchester/Franklin Heights) each had nine kills for MC. Mauer dished out 23 assists.
With a 12-2 advantage in blocks, Marietta dominated play at the net. Hackenberg notched seven blocks including one solo and six block assists. Sophomores
Keri Horton (Westland, Mich./Wayne Memorial) and
Chloe Janson (Lawrenceburg, Ind./East Central) had five and four blocks, respectively. On the back line Ervin recorded 27 digs and sophomore
Kennedy Clyde (Chagrin Falls/Hawken School) had 16.
Bethany College's Mackenzie Lauber was named the Most Valuable Player. In addition to Mauer, the All-Tournament Team included Natalija Galens (Grove City), Breana Harris (Bethany), Marissa Jay (Hiram), Madison Lovern (Transylvania), Jessica Simpson (Ohio Valley) and Regina Zyle (Hiram).
Marietta travels to Carnegie Mellon University (Pa.) on Wednesday (Sept. 11) for a 7:00 p.m. match. Fans can follow the Pioneers all season long at
