MARIETTA, Ohio – The College of Wooster scored a pair of first half goals and then held on for a 2-1 win over Marietta College in women's soccer action Saturday (Sept. 7) afternoon. The Pioneers slip to 1-2 on the season, while Wooster improves to 3-0 overall.
Wooster jumped on top in the 14th minute when Jessica Friesen took a cross from Kathleen Kalafatis inside the six-yard box and fired the ball into the upper right corner for a 1-0 lead.
The Fighting Scots made it 2-0 at the 31:48 mark. Lauren Hancher found Kennedy Payne open inside the 18-yard box. Payne collected the cross and placed the ball into the lower left corner of the net.
Wooster held the Pioneers without a shot in the opening period. The Scots took eight shots in the first half and had four corners to none for Marietta.
The Pioneers cut the Wooster lead in half with a goal in the 86th minute. Sophomore
Jessica Long (Carroll, Ohio/Bloom-Carroll) sent a cross into the six-yard box where junior forward
Stevie Reilly (Bethel Park, Pa./Bethel Park Senior) headed it passed the Scot keeper for the goal. The goal was Reilly's third of the season.
Wooster finished with 15 shots to just two for the Pioneers. The Scots also held a 7-1 advantage in corner kicks. Senior
Kaitlyn Pearse (Galena/Olentangy Orange) made four saves in goal for Marietta.
