Wittenberg escapes with last second win over Men's Soccer

Box Score WILMINGTON, Ohio – The Marietta College men's soccer team dropped a 2-1 decision to Wittenberg University Friday (Sept. 6) afternoon in the first round of the Wilmington College Kiwanis Classic. The loss drops the Pioneers to 1-2 on the season. Wittenberg improves to 2-2 overall.

The Pioneers jumped on top early in the match when they were awarded a penalty kick in the 14th minute. Junior forward Wesley Riley (Marietta/Marietta) buried the ball in the back of the net for a 1-0 lead.

Wittenberg knotted the match with a goal at the 37:38 mark. Andre Lorenz took a pass from Zach White and beat the Pioneer goalkeeper to even the score at a goal apiece.

The match appeared to be headed to overtime as the score remained 1-1 until the final seconds. Wittenberg was awarded a free kick at the top of the box and Kevin Bond put the game winner away with a single second left on the clock.

For the match, Wittenberg took 14 shots, including seven on goal. Marietta had seven shots, all on frame. The Tigers were awarded six corners to five for the Pioneers.

Senior Chris Stollar (Marietta/Marietta) went the distance in goal for Marietta. Stollar made five saves in the match. James Van Artsdalen posted six saves in goal for Wittenberg.
