Box Score 2 MARIETTA, Ohio – Marietta College finished play in the Pioneer Classic volleyball tournament with a pair of convincing wins on Sunday (Sept. 22) afternoon. The Pioneers blanked Roanoke College (Va.) 3-0 and posted a 3-1 win over West Virginia Tech.
Marietta defeated Roanoke 25-19, 25-21 and 25-13. The sets scores against West Virginia Tech were 25-18, 24-26, 25-8 and 25-10.
The Pioneers (9-8 overall) used a 6-0 run in the first set against Roanoke (9-7) to take control of the match early. Marietta would go on to score in streaks in the second and third sets including seven of the last nine points in the second and 11 of 12 points midway through the third set.
Junior middle blocker
Rachel Hackenberg (Canal Winchester/Franklin Heights) has 12 kills and a .500 attack percentage against Roanoke. She added four blocks in the win. Sophomores
Chloe Janson (Lawrenceburg, Ind./East Central) and
Keri Horton (Westland, Mich./Wayne Memorial) had seven and six kills, respectively, and both had three blocks.
The Pioneers were again without the services of starting setter
Laura Mauer (Terre Haute, Ind./North) who is out with an ankle injury. Freshman
Julia Moskaluk (Copley/Revere) made her second start and dished out 30 assists.
Sophomore libero
Mary Ervin (Lewis Center/Olentangy Orange) anchored the back line with 21 digs. Freshman defensive specialist
Mallory Vodopich (Canton/Massillon Perry) added 13 digs, while senior
Amber Wiley (Brunswick/Brookside) had nine digs and two aces.
Marietta head coach
Ray Costa was able to rest several of his regulars in the win over West Virginia Tech (3-13). The Pioneers' bench took full advantage of the extra playing time.
Sophomore middle blocker
Shauntiel Oliver-Smith (Elyria/Elyria) led all players with 14 kills, while sophomore outside hitter
Devin Walter (Indianapolis, Ind./Southport) put away nine kills. Fellow sophomores
Kennedy Clyde (Chagrin Falls/Hawken School) and
Alexis Callaway (Portage, Mich./Portage Central) added seven and six kills, respectively.
Moskaluk had a match-high 37 assists. Senior
Amber Wiley (Brunswick/Brookside) handled the libero duties and recorded 17 digs. Freshman
Beccah Roth (Norwalk/Norwalk) posted a career-high 11 digs and Moskaluk chipped in with 10.
