Box Score 2 MARIETTA, Ohio – The Marietta College volleyball team dropped a pair of matches in the Pioneer Classic Saturday (Sept. 21) afternoon. The Pioneers lost a hard-fought match to Washington and Lee University (Va.) 3-2 and then fell to Denison University 3-0. Marietta is now 7-8 on the season.
Washington and Lee posted set scores of 21-25, 25-14, 25-8, 22-25 and 16-14 to escape with the victory. Senior
Paige DeVriendt (Bowling Green/Bowling Green) had a match-high 13 kills. Sophomores
Kennedy Clyde (Chagrin Falls/Hawken School) and
Chloe Janson (Lawrenceburg, Ind./East Central) added nine and eight kills respectively. Janson also had a team-best four blocks
Junior setter
Laura Mauer (Terre Haute, Ind./North) had 13 assists before leaving the match with an injury. Freshman
Julia Moskaluk (Copley/Revere) took over and dished out 18 assists the rest of the way. Sophomore
Mary Ervin (Lewis Center/Olentangy Orange) had 20 digs from the libero position, while Clyde had 17 and senior
Amber Wiley (Brunswick/Brookside) notched 16.
Playing back-to-back matches, the Pioneers struggled with the fresh legs of Denison University. The Big Red posted set scores of 25-22, 25-17 and 25-16 in the sweep.
Junior
Rachel Hackenberg (Canal Winchester/Franklin Heights) and sophomore
Keri Horton (Westland, Mich./Wayne Memorial) led the Pioneer attack with eight and seven kills, respectively. DeVriendt added six kills.
Moskaluk handled the setting duties and notched 28 assists. Ervin again led the team with 17 digs. Clyde and Wiley each chipped in with 10 digs apiece.
