Volleyball drops 3-1 decision at Carnegie Mellon

Box Score PITTSBURGH, Pa. – Carnegie Mellon University (Pa.) defeated Marietta College by the score of 3-0 Wednesday (Sept. 11) evening in volleyball action. The Tartans (9-1 overall) posted set scores of 25-22, 25-21, 22-25 and 25-23.

Carnegie Mellon all-region right-side hitter Ali Celentano was nearly unstoppable. Celentano, a junior, wracked up 20 kills and posted a .286 attack percentage to lead the Tartan offense.

The Pioneers (4-5 overall) countered with junior Rachel Hackenberg (Canal Winchester/Franklin Heights) and sophomore Keri Horton (Westland, Mich./Wayne Memorial). Horton posted 15 kills, while Hackenberg had 10. Junior setter Laura Mauer (Terre Haute, Ind./North) handed out 38 assists.

Senior Paige DeVriendt (Bowling Green/Bowling Green), and sophomores Devin Walter (Indianapolis, Ind./Southport) and Chloe Janson (Lawrenceburg, Ind./East Central) each had seven kills for the Pioneers. Sophomore libero Mary Ervin (Lewis Center/Olentangy Orange) tallied 22 digs with senior Amber Wiley (Brunswick/Brookside) recording 13 and sophomore Kennedy Clyde (Chagrin Falls/Hawken School) finished with 11 digs.

The Pioneers had another strong showing at the net on defense notching 14 blocks as a team. Freshman Julia Moskaluk (Copley/Revere) had eight solo blocks, while Janson turned back five Tartan attacks.

Marietta is back on the road this weekend. The Pioneers travel to the DePauw University (Ind.) Tournament to play four matches. Marietta opens with Olivet College (Mich.) at 4:00 p.m. Friday (Sept. 13). Fans can follow the Pioneers all season long at pioneers.marietta.edu.
