Box Score MARIETTA, Ohio – An own goal just over two minutes into overtime gave Saint Vincent College (Pa.) a 2-1 win over Marietta College Sunday (Sept. 1) afternoon in men's soccer action. With the loss, the Pioneers are 1-1 on the season.
Saint Vincent (1-1 overall) took the early lead with a goal in the 14th minute. After the Pioneers were whistled for a foul, Kevin Proctor scored on the following direct kick from 25-yards out.
Senior defender
Ryan Stephens (Enon/South Point)'s diving header at the 38:08 mark tied the match at 1-1. Fellow senior
Miles Alexander (Bellbrook/Bellbrook) sent a cross into the six-yard box where Stephens headed it home.
Both teams had opportunities in the second half but neither managed a goal. Saint Vincent took six shots in the second period to just three for Marietta. However, the Pioneers had four corner kicks to none for Saint Vincent.
A scramble in front of the Marietta goal proved costly for the Pioneers as the ball deflected off a Marietta defender and into the net giving Saint Vincent the victory 2:07 into the extra period.
For the match, each team took 13 shots. Marietta had six corners, while Saint Vincent took two. Senior
Chris Stollar (Marietta/Marietta) made two saves in goal for the Pioneers. Eric Houghton recorded six saves for Saint Vincent.
