Box Score 2 BLUFFTON, Ohio – Marietta College split a pair of matches on the final day of the Sommer Center Spiketacular hosted by Bluffton University. No. 5 ranked Hope College (Mich.) defeated the Pioneers 3-0 Saturday (Aug. 31) morning.
Marietta finished the tournament with a 3-0 victory over Bluffton. The Pioneers are 1-3 overall on the season.
Hope showed why it's a top-five team in the nation downing the Pioneers 25-12, 25-17 and 25-13. Sophomore outside hitter
Kennedy Clyde (Chagrin Falls/Hawken School) had a team-high eight kills to lead Marietta's attack. Junior setter
Laura Mauer (Terre Haute, Ind./North) had 16 assists and sophomore defensive specialist
Mary Ervin (Lewis Center/Olentangy Orange) tallied 12 digs.
Marietta bounced back with a sweep of Bluffton. The Pioneers posted set scores of 25-14, 25-20 and 27-25. Marietta trailed 21-13 in the third set before storming back with a 14-4 run for the victory.
The Pioneers used a balanced attack against the Beavers. Junior middle blocker
Rachel Hackenberg (Canal Winchester/Franklin Heights) had nine kills, while sophomores
Keri Horton (Westland, Mich./Wayne Memorial) and
Chloe Janson (Lawrenceburg, Ind./East Central) each had eight. Hackenberg and Janson controlled the net on defesne as well with four blocks apiece.
Mauer dished out a match-high 27 assists and added a pair of service aces, three blocks and 11 digs. Ervin had a match-high 12 digs.
Marietta returns home to host it's annual River City Classic next Friday through Sunday (Sept. 6-8). The Pioneers open the tournament against Bethany College (W.Va.) at 6:00 p.m. on Friday.
