DEFIANCE, Ohio – Westminster College (Pa.) defeated Marietta College by the score of 3-1 Saturday (Aug. 31) afternoon in the final round of the Purple and Gold Classic hosted by Defiance College. The Pioneers fall to 1-1 on the season, while the Titans are 1-0 overall.
Westminster jumped out to a 2-0 lead with goals in the 10th and 21st minute of play. Raechel Pusateri took a pass from Krista Edwards and found the back of the net for the first goal of the match. Krista Edwards tallied the second with an assist from Amanda Turi.
The Pioneers cut the lead in half two minutes later when junior forward
Stevie Reilly (Bethel Park, Pa./Bethel Park Senior) score an unassisted goal at the 21:16 mark. The score remained 2-1 at the half.
The Titans picked up an insurance goal six minutes into the second half. Jordan Steele sent a corner kick into the box where Kerri Inzinga headed it into the net.
Marietta took 16 shots to 15 for Westminster. The Pioneers also held a slim 3-2 advantage in corner kicks.
Senior
Kaitlyn Pearse (Galena/Olentangy Orange) recorded eight saves for the Pioneers in goal. Westminster's keeper Madeline Frech had nine saves.
Marietta is back in action next Saturday and Sunday (Sept. 7-8) when the Pioneers host the Marietta Classic. Marietta plays Wooster at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday and Bethany College (W.Va.) at 3:00 p.m. on Sunday.
