Softball splits with BW, will be No. 4 seed in OAC Tourney

BEREA, Ohio – The Marietta College softball team closed the regular season with a doubleheader split at Baldwin Wallace University Saturday (April 27) afternoon. The Yellow Jackets took the first game 6-5, while the Pioneers bounced back to win the nightcap 2-1.

Marietta finished the regular season with a 21-15 overall record and an 11-7 OAC mark. Baldwin Wallace ends the spring 20-18 overall and 5-11 in conference play.

The Pioneers scored a run in each of the first three innings to take a 3-0 lead on the Yellow Jackets. Senior catcher Ris McDaniel (Pickerington/North) hit her third home run of the season, a solo shot in the third inning.

Baldwin Wallace took advantage of two Marietta errors to score five runs in the bottom of the third taking a 5-3 lead.

Junior Hannah Tarski's (Independence/Independence) sac fly in the sixth scored Courtney Kerwood (Nashport/Tri-Valley) and Rachel Montgomery (Massillon, Ohio/Perry) tied the game, 5-5, with an RBI single in the seventh.

With one out in the bottom of the seventh, BW junior Lauren Feciuch launched a walk-off home run over the leftfield fence for a 6-5 Yellow Jacket victory.

Junior Tabitha Murray went the distance in the circle to pick up her 17th win of the season. Murray allowed five runs, four earned, on nine hits in 7.0 innings of work. She walked three and struck out six.

Kerwood (1-3) took the loss in relief. Kerwood pitched 3.2 innings and was charged with one run on seven hits. She struck out three. Sophomore Alex O'Hair started the game and threw 2.2 innings allowing five runs, one earned, on eight hits with a strikeout.

Sophomore third baseman Sarah Mayo (Proctorville/Chesapeake) went 2-for-3 at the plate for the Pioneers, while Tarski drove in two runs.

Marietta freshman shortstop Kelsey Kallenborn (Marshallville/Smithville) put the Pioneers on top in the second game with a solo home run down the leftfield line. It was Kallenborn's fifth home run of the season.

The Pioneers added a run in the third inning. Senior Katie Swejk (Tallmadge/Tallmadge) reached on a one-out double and stole third base. Mayo followed with an RBI single to center giving Marietta a 2-0 lead.

Freshman Lauren Larrick (Leesburg/Fairfield Local) (10-6) kept the Yellow Jackets off balance in the batter's box. Larrick limited BW to one run on five hits. She walked two and struck out five in 7.0 innings of work.

Murray (17-10) took the loss for the Yellow Jackets. In her second complete game of the day, Murray gave up two runs on seven hits. She walked a pair and had six strikeouts.

Swejk and Mayo each went 2-for-4 for Marietta in the nightcap.

Marietta is the No. 4 seed in the OAC Tournament next weekend being hosted by top-seeded Capital University. The Pioneers open the tournament against Capital on Friday (May 3) at 12:00 p.m.
