WILMINGTON, Ohio – Wilmington College defeated Marietta College by the score of 68-59 Saturday (Dec. 7) afternoon in Ohio Athletic Conference women's basketball action. The Pioneers fall to 6-2 overall and 1-1 in the OAC. Wilmington improves to 4-3 overall and 2-0 in the OAC.
Foul trouble plagued the Pioneers all game and ultimately was the difference in the game. Wilmington finished 25-of-35 at the free throw line, while Marietta had just 17 free throw attempts making 12.
Marietta's only lead in the game, 6-4, came on a jumper from
Tori Dixon (Londonderry/Vinton County) at the 17:04 mark. Wilmington responded with a 9-0 run and never trailed again.
Junior
Heather Booth (Newport/Frontier) led the Pioneers with 16 points and nine rebounds. Classmate
Candice Alexander (Fairborn/Fairborn) finished with 10 points, seven rebounds and three blocked shots. Dixon was also in double figures with 10 points.
Wilmington's Haley Howard led all scorers with 22 points. Howard was a perfect 11-of-11 at the charity stripe and tied for the team lead with six rebounds. Brittany Jefferson came off the bench to score 21 points and grab six boards.
The Quakers had 39 rebounds in the game to 36 for Marietta. The Pioneers turned the ball over 18 times, while Wilmington committed 17 turnovers.
Marietta shot 21-of-54 (38.9%) from the floor, 5-of-18 (27.8%) from three-point range and 12-of-17 (70.6%) at the line. Wilmington hit 38.0% (19-of-50) from the floor, 23.8% (5-of-21) from behind the arc and 71.4% (25-of-35) at the line.
