MARIETTA, Ohio – Senior
Paige Lamb (Marietta/Marietta) had a career day to lead the Marietta College women's basketball team over the College of Mount St. Joseph, 82-58, Saturday (Nov. 30) in the first game of the 29th annual Jim Meagle Turkey Shoot sponsored by BSN Sports.
Lamb equaled her career-high with 15 points but tallied a double-double with a game-best 13 rebounds. She scored 13 of her 15 points in the second half.
Marietta never trailed in the game and lead by as many 27 points. The Pioneers held a comfortable 38-28 lead at halftime.
A free throw from Melanie Monahan got the Lions within nine, 44-35, with 16:07 left in the second half. But Marietta responded with a 13-0 run over the next four minutes to put the game out of reach, 57-35.
Junior
Candice Alexander (Fairborn/Fairborn) was Marietta's leading scorer with 16 points including 11 in the first half. Freshman center
Mackenzie Kiser (Windham/Champion) continues to play well off the bench. Kiser notched a double-double with 10 points and 10 boards.
Mount St. Joseph sophomore Heidi McManus led the Lions with 16 points. Classmate Madie Long chipped in with 10 points, while Morgan Froehlke had nine points. Brooke Mosler and Tara Dennis each had seven rebounds.
The Pioneers dominated the paint outscoring MSJ 32-16 in the post and pulling down 64 rebounds to just 42 for the Lions. Marietta's rebounding advantage led to 25 second chance points.
Neither team shot particularly well. Marietta was 29-of-75 (38.7%) from the floor, 5-of-21 (23.8%) from three-point range and 19-of-30 (63.3%) at the free throw line. The Lions were 19-of-68 (27.9%) from the floor, 6-of-28 (21.4%) behind the arc and 14-of-22 (63.6%) at the line.
The Pioneers will play for their 14th Turkey Shoot title Sunday (Dec. 1) at 3:00 p.m. against Ohio Valley University, a 70-67 winner against Kenyon in the first round. Mount St. Joseph will meet Kenyon College at 1:00 p.m. in the consolation game.
