Denison no match for Men's Basketball

GRANVILLE, Ohio – Post players Eddy Grenert (Wooster, Ohio/Triway) and Andy Stegman (Wheelersburg/Wheelersburg) combined for 28 points off the bench to lead Marietta College over Denison University 91-75 Saturday (Nov. 23) afternoon. The Pioneers remain undefeated, 4-0, on the season, while Denison falls to 0-2 overall.

Grenert hit 7-of-11 field goal attempts and scored a team-high 15 points. Stegman chipped in with 13 points connecting on 5-of-6 shot attempts, including 3-of-4 from three-point range.

Denison hit a three-pointer on the first possession of the game for the early lead. The lead was short-lived as Andy Dollman (Vienna, W.Va./Parkersburg) hit a jumper at 18:14 to tie the game, 4-4. Garrett Stephenson (West Milton/Milton-Union) put the Pioneers ahead, 6-4, with a bucket at 16:48. Marietta would lead the rest of the way.

An 11-2 run midway through the first half pushed the Pioneer lead to 12 points, 24-12. The lead hovered around 10 points until the final minute when a pair of three-pointers extended the margin to 18 points, 51-33. Marietta led 51-37 at halftime.

The Big Red trimmed the deficit to 11 points three different times during the second half but couldn't get any closer. A three-pointer from Stegman with 13:46 left in the game gave Marietta its biggest lead of the afternoon, 69-50.

Five Pioneers finished in double figures. In addition to Grenert and Stegman, senior Tyler Hammond (Cleveland/St. Ignatius) scored 12 points on four three-pointers, all in the second half. Dollman and A.J. Davis (Naples, Fla./Palmetto Ridge) each added 11 points.

Stephenson finished with nine points and a team-high seven rebounds. The Pioneers won the rebounding battle, 36-29. Davis grabbed six boards, while Stegman and Dollman had five apiece.

Brad Woolard's 16 points led fibe Denison players in double figures. David Meurer and Alex Longi had 14 points, Patrick Keller scored 12 and Darius White finished with 10. Longi pulled down a game-high eight rebounds.

For the game, Marietta shot 35-of-68 (51.5%) from the floor, 13-of-30 (43.3%) behind the arc and 8-of-9 (88.9%) at the free throw line. Denison connected on 30-of-60 (50.0%) field goal attempts, 4-of-16 (25.5%) three-pointers and 11-of-14 (78.6%) at the line.

Up next for the Pioneers is a showdown with No. 8-ranked Wooster. The Fighting Scots visit Ban Johnson Arena on Wednesday (Nov. 27) for a 7:30 p.m. tip. Marietta is looking to avenge last season's two-point loss, 59-57, at Wooster.
