Capital knocks off Women's Basketball 67-56

Box Score MARIETTA, Ohio – The Marietta College women's basketball team led Capital University for the first 30 minutes of the game Wednesday (Jan. 16) evening but the Pioneers couldn't hold the lead and lost 67-56. Capital improves to 11-5 overall and 6-3 in the Ohio Athletic Conference. Marietta drops to 6-10 and 1-8 in league play.

The Pioneers scored the first six points of the game and raced out to a 12-2 lead at the 16:01 mark. Juniors Tori Dixon (Londonderry/Vinton County) and Paige Lamb (Marietta/Marietta) scored five points each during the opening run.

Marietta's lead hovered between five and 10 points the entire half. The Pioneers took a nine point lead, 37-28, into the intermission.

Capital opened the second half with a 9-1 run to get within a point, 38-37, with 13:19 remaining in the game. Junior Cookie Geroski gave the Crusaders their first lead of the night, 46-45, with a jumper at the 9:02 mark.

Capital would not relinquish the lead the rest of the way. A pair of free throws from senior Stacy Timmerman with 20 seconds left gave the Crusaders their biggest lead of the game, 67-56.

Dixon led the Pioneers with 13 points and six assists. Sophomore Heather Booth (Newport/Frontier) scored 10 points and grabbed six rebounds. Lamb chipped in with nine points and sophomore Candice Alexander (Fairborn/Fairborn) had a game-high 11 boards.

Timmerman was a perfect 11-of-11 at the free throw line and led all scorers with 29 points. She pulled down a team-best seven rebounds. Geroski finished with 19 points and seven boards.

For the game Marietta shot 44.9% (22-of-49) from the floor, 38.5% (5-of-13) behind the arc and 63.6% (7-of-11) at the line. Capital hit 22-of-62 (35.5%) from the floor, 4-of-14 (28.6%) from three-point range and 19-of-22 (86.4%) at the line.

The Pioneers held a slim 37-34 edge on the glass. Capital forced 25 Pioneer turnovers, while committing just 11.
