Box Score UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS, Ohio – John Carroll University came from behind to defeat Marietta College 80-65 Saturday (Jan. 12) afternoon in women's basketball action. The Blue Streaks improve to 10-5 overall and 3-5 in the Ohio Athletic Conference. The Pioneers are 6-9 on the season and 1-7 in league play.
Marietta controlled play for the first 20 minutes. While neither team lead by more than four, the Pioneers held the lead most of the half. Junior
Tori Dixon (Londonderry/Vinton County) hit a floating jumper as time ran out gave Marietta a 35-31 edge at the break.
Following a layup from freshman
Emily Jones (Dublin/Dublin Scioto) to tie the score at 45-45 with 12:32 left in the game, John Carroll went on a 12-0 run over the next three minutes to steal the momentum.
Any hope of a comeback for the Pioneers was thwarted by the Blue Streaks' free throw shooting. JCU hit 11-of-14 from the charity stripe in the second half to keep its lead.
Dixon finished with 13 points. Sophomores
Candice Alexander (Fairborn/Fairborn) and
Heather Booth (Newport/Frontier) each tallied a double-double. Alexander scored 13 points and grabbed 10 rebounds. Booth added 12 points and also pulled down 10 boards.
Junior Missy Spahar led the Blue Streaks with a game-high 25 points and 12 rebounds. Freshman Elissa Day chipped in with 14 points, while sophomore Beth Switzler had eight rebounds.
Marietta shot 35.7% (25-of-70) from the floor, 18.2% (4-of-22) behind the arc and 68.8% (11-of-16) at the line. John Carroll hit 29-of-63 (46.0%) from the floor, 5-of-19 (26.3%) from three-point range and 17-of-20 (85.0%) from the line.
The Pioneers held a slim 44-39 edge in rebounds. The Pioneers committed 21 turnovers, while John Carroll had 16.
