MARIETTA, Ohio – The Marietta College women's soccer team surrendered an own goal with 2:03 left in the match as Westminster College defeated the Pioneers 3-2 Saturday (Sept. 8) afternoon in the Marietta College Classic. The loss drops Marietta to 0-4 on the season while Westminster moves to 2-2 overall.

The Titans scored two goals in a five-minute span to come from behind and deny the Pioneers their first win of the season. Rachel Simko gave Westminster a 1-0 lead in the 35th minute with an assist from Krista Edwards. The score would remain 1-0 at halftime.

Marietta evened the match at 1-1 when the Titans deflected the ball into their own net at 69:59. Junior midfielder #Emily Jones (Loudon, Tenn./Northville (Mich.))# put the Pioneers ahead just 33 seconds later when she collected a cross from #Whitnie Pinkston (Parkersburg, W.Va./Parkersburg)# in the 6-yard box and buried it in the back of the net.

Westminster responded in the 83rd minute. Krista Edwards sent the ball into the box where Amanda Turi shot the ball into the lower left corner of the goal to even the match, 2-2.

Westminster took nine shots in the match to Marietta's seven. The Pioneers held a slim 4-3 edge in corner kicks.

Junior #Kaitlyn Pearse (Galena/Olentangy Orange)# made two saves in goal for Marietta, while Jenn Cantella had three saves for the Titans.

In the first match of the Classic, Defiance College defeated Bethany College 4-3 in overtime.

The weekend concludes Sunday (Sept. 9) when Westminster and Defiance play at 1 p.m. and Marietta faces Bethany at 3 p.m.
