Box Score 2 LEXINGTON, Va. – The Marietta College volleyball team split a pair of matches on the first day of the Washington and Lee Invitational on Friday (Sept. 7). The Pioneers are now 6-1 overall.
Marietta started the weekend with a 3-0 sweep of Lynchburg College. The win gave the Pioneers their first 6-0 start since the 1991 season. The set scores against Lynchburg were 25-14, 25-22 and 25-20.
Freshman
Keri Horton (Westland, Mich./Wayne Memorial) and senior
Alex VanGundy (Powell/Olentangy Liberty) led the Pioneers with 10 and nine kills, respectively. Junior
Paige DeVriendt (Bowling Green/Bowling Green) added seven kills and sophomore setter
Laura Mauer (Terre Haute, Ind./North) dished out 32 assists.
Defensively, senior libero
Jen Braun (Chagrin Falls/Kenston) and freshman
Mary Ervin (Lewis Center/Olentangy Orange) each had 13 digs. Sophomore
Rachel Hackenberg (Canal Winchester/Franklin Heights) blocked five Lynchburg attacks, while junior Kathryn Hanssen stopped four.
In the second match of day, Washington and Lee edged Marietta 3-1. The Generals posted set scores of 25-21, 26-24, 20-25 and 25-22.
Hackenberg led all players with 18 kills in the match. DeVriendt also reached double figures with 11 kills. Mauer posted a match-high 41 assists and Braun also had a match-high 21 digs.
Hanssen and Horton each blocked six General attacks.
The Pioneers play two more matches Saturday (Sept. 8). Marietta meets Southern Virginia University at 1 p.m. and North Carolina Wesleyan at 3:30 p.m.
