Box Score MARIETTA, Ohio – The Marietta College women's soccer team opened Ohio Athletic Conference play with a 1-0 win over Heidelberg University Saturday (Sept. 29) afternoon. The Pioneers improve to 3-6 overall and 1-0 in the OAC. Heidelberg falls to 1-7-1 and 0-1 in league play.
The Pioneers dominated play in the first half but couldn't find the back of the net. Marietta kept the pressure on the Student Princes taking 10 shots and five corners in the opening period.
Heidelberg keeper Julie Cross kept Marietta off the scoreboard making six saves in the first half. She finished the day with 11.
After failing to convert several scoring opportunities, junior defender
Rachel Hartong ( Mt. Vernon/Mount Vernon ) cleared the ball to classmate
Stacey Smith (Cambridge/John Glenn ). Smith unleashed a shot from 35-yards out that was just over the outstretched arms of Cross and in for the game-winner in the 87th minute. It was Smith's first goal of the season.
Marietta took 16 shots, including 12 on frame, to just five shots for Heidelberg. The Student Princes held a slim 7-6 edge in corners.
Junior goalkeeper
Kaitlyn Pearse (Galena/Olentangy Orange) recorded three saves. Marietta's back line of Hartong,
Katie Gordon (Mentor/Mentor ),
Lauren Morain (Harrison City, Pa./Penn-Trafford) and
Hannah Duncan (Norwalk/Norwalk) kept the Student Princes away from goal all afternoon en route to the Pioneers' third shutout of the season.
