Box Score MARIETTA, Ohio – Senior midfielder
Brandon Siringer (Willowick/Eastlake North) scored a goal and added an assist to lead the Marietta College men's soccer team to a 3-0 win over Heidelberg University Saturday (Sept. 29) afternoon. The Pioneers are 4-5 overall and 1-0 in the Ohio Athletic Conference. Heidelberg falls to 5-5 and 0-1 in the OAC.
The Pioneers struck first when sophomore
Wesley Riley (Marietta/Marietta) crossed the ball into the six-yard box where Siringer settled and fired the ball into the upper right-hand corner in just the fourth minute of play. The goal would prove to be the game-winner.
Marietta increased the lead to 2-0 in the 28th minute on goal by
Lucas Eick (Hartville/Marlington). Riley sent a long throw into the six-yard box where Siringer directed to Eick. Eick knocked the ball into the left corner of the net for the goal.
Heidelberg struggled to mount any attack in the first half. The Pioneer back line of
Matt Stewart (Garfield Heights/Padua Franciscan),
Ryan Stephens (Enon/South Point) and
Scott Eilmann (North Royalton/North Royalton) smothered the Student Princes at every turn. Heidelberg was limited to just three shots in the half, none on goal.
Marietta turned up the pressure on Heidelberg with a lightning quick goal in the second half. With assists from Eick and
Miles Alexander (Bellbrook/Bellbrook),
Jared Abston (Strongsville/Strongsville) headed the ball in just 97 seconds into the period for a 3-0 Pioneer lead.
Playing with a sense of urgency, Heidelberg created several scoring opportunities in the second half. The Student Princes fired 12 shots in the period, but couldn't get one past Marietta keeper
Chris Stollar (Marietta/Marietta).
Stollar was a brick wall making eight saves in the final 45 minutes. In the 66th minute, Heidelberg's Nico Samaniego broke through the defense and fired a point blank shot that Stollar blocked. Samaniego collected the loose ball and took another hard shot that Stollar smothered.
Marietta took 17 shots to Heidelberg's 15. The Student Princes had a slim 8-6 edge in corners.
Stollar recorded eight saves in goal for Marietta as he notched the Pioneers' third shutout of the season. Matthew Stevens made six saves for the Student Princes.
Marietta travels to Alliance on Tuesday (Oct. 2) for a 7 p.m. match at the University of Mount Union. Fans can catch the action live at
