Box Score TIFFIN, Ohio – Outside hitters
Alex VanGundy (Powell/Olentangy Liberty) and
Paige DeVriendt (Bowling Green/Bowling Green) led the Marietta College volleyball team to a 3-0 upset of No. 23-ranked Heidelberg University Friday (Sept. 28) evening. The Pioneers posted set scores of 25-23, 25-23 and 25-21 to improve to 13-4 overall and 2-0 in the Ohio Athletic Conference. Heidelberg falls to 13-6 and 2-1 in the OAC.
The first two sets were close, back and forth battles as neither team led by more than four points. There were 12 ties in the first set and 11 in the second. The Pioneers pulled away in the third set leading by as many as six points en route to the 3-0 sweep.
VanGundy put away a match-high 14 kills and posted a .273 attack percentage. DeVriendt, playing for the first time in nearly two weeks due to an injury, recorded 13 kills and led all players with 42 total attacks.
Senior libero
Jen Braun (Chagrin Falls/Kenston) had 16 digs to move into second place on Marietta's all-time list with 1,658 career digs. She is 152 digs behind Becca Holzworth's school-record of 1,810.
Sophomore setter
Laura Mauer (Terre Haute, Ind./North) dished out 32 assists and collected nine digs. Freshman defensive specialist
Mary Ervin (Lewis Center/Olentangy Orange) added 10 digs, while sophomore middle blocker
Rachel Hackenberg (Canal Winchester/Franklin Heights) chipped in with seven kills.
