Box Score 2 MARIETTA, Ohio – The Marietta College volleyball team won the BSN River City Tournament with two wins Saturday (Sept. 1) afternoon and a perfect 4-0 record on the weekend. The Pioneers defeated Waynesburg University 3-0 and then downed Bluffton University in the championship match, 3-1.
Marietta beat Waynesburg by the scores of 25-18, 25-20 and 25-11. Bluffton took the first set in the title match before the Pioneers won the next three to secure the victory. Set scores were 22-25, 25-16, 25-18 and 25-22.
Tournament Most Valuable Player
Rachel Hackenberg (Canal Winchester/Franklin Heights) led the Pioneer attack with seven kills against Waynesburg. Senior libero
Jen Braun (Chagrin Falls/Kenston) also earned all-tournament honors. Braun had 12 digs in the match.
Junior outside hitter
Paige DeVriendt (Bowling Green/Bowling Green) added six kills and senior setter
Ally Jenkins (Twinsburg/Walsh Jesuit) had a match-high 29 assists.
In the championship match, senior outside hitter
Alex VanGundy (Powell/Olentangy Liberty) led all players with 14 kills. DeVriendt added 11, Kathryn Hanssen had eight and Hackenberg chipped in with seven. Hackenberg recorded five blocks.
Sophomore setter
Laura Mauer (Terre Haute, Ind./North) dished out 38 assists and had five service aces. Braun notched 25 digs, while Mauer added eight.
Seniors Heather Schierer and Brooke Distel, along with freshman Mackenzie Lauber, represented Bluffton on the all-tournament team. Ohio Valley University senior Taylor Buchtmann and Waynesburg junior Mabel Culp also earned all-tournament honors.
The Pioneers host Carnegie Mellon on Wednesday (Sept. 5) at 7 p.m.
