Box Score UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS, Ohio – The Marietta College volleyball team opened Ohio Athletic Conference play with a 3-1 win on the road at John Carroll University Wednesday (Sept. 19) evening. The Pioneers, winners of their last three matches, are 10-4 overall and 1-0 in the OAC. John Carroll is 6-10 and 0-1.
All four sets were close hard-fought battles. The Pioneers won the match by the scores of 25-22, 25-20, 20-25 and 25-20.
Marietta freshman right side hitter
Keri Horton (Westland, Mich./Wayne Memorial) led all players with 14 kills. Sophomore middle blocker
Rachel Hackenberg (Canal Winchester/Franklin Heights) added 11 kills and a match-high five blocks.
Outside hitters freshman
Kennedy Clyde (Chagrin Falls/Hawken School) and senior
Alex VanGundy (Powell/Olentangy Liberty) posted eight and seven kills, respectively. Sophomore setter
Laura Mauer (Terre Haute, Ind./North) dished out 43 assists.
Senior libero
Jen Braun (Chagrin Falls/Kenston) led the Pioneer defense with 22 digs, while freshman
Mary Ervin (Lewis Center/Olentangy Orange) had 12. Mauer and sophomore defensive specialist Brittany Merritt each had seven digs. Merritt also notched four service aces.
Marietta is on the road for a pair of non-conference matches this Saturday (Sept. 22). The Pioneers travel to Kenyon College for a tri-match. Marietta plays Hiram College at 3 p.m. and Kenyon at 5 p.m.
