Washington & Jefferson defeats Women's Soccer 4-1

Box Score WASHINGTON, Pa. – The Marietta College women's soccer team lost 4-1 at Washington & Jefferson (Pa.) College Wednesday (Sept. 19) evening. The loss drops the Pioneers to 2-6 on the season. The Presidents improve to 2-4 on the season.

W&J junior forward Holly Shipley gave the Presidents an early lead when she took a long cross from Jess Skovira and scored in the 10th minute. The Presidents remained on the attack the rest of the half taking 11 shots to Marietta's one. Pioneer junior goalkeeper Kaitlyn Pearse (Galena/Olentangy Orange) made six saves to keep the score 1-0 at the break.

Pioneer freshman Lauren Morain (Harrison City, Pa./Penn-Trafford) knotted the game at 1-1 less than two minutes into the second period. Midfielder Danielle Falkner (Akron/Green ) slipped the ball through the W&J defense to Morain who placed the ball in the upper right corner of the net.

Shipley tallied the game-winner for the Presidents four minutes later with an assist from Dawn Murphy. Shipley picked up an assist on Nikki Hladik's goal in the 70th minute. Murphy finished the scoring in the 85th minute with an assist from Lauren Reynolds.

Washington & Jefferson outshot the Pioneers 23-2 and held a 6-0 edge in corner kicks.

Pearse ended the match with eight saves for the Pioneers. Sophomore Mattie Follen had one save for W&J.

The Pioneers are off until Saturday (Sept. 29) when they open Ohio Athletic Conference play at Heidelberg University. Kick off is slated for 2 p.m.
