Box Score 2 MARIETTA, Ohio – The Marietta College volleyball team wrapped up play in the Pioneer Classic Saturday (Sept. 15) afternoon with a pair of victories. The Pioneers swept Adrian (Mich.) College 3-0 and then slipped by Hiram College 3-2. Marietta improves to 9-4 overall.
The Pioneers defeated Adrian in straight sets 25-22, 25-19 and 25-21.
Paige DeVriendt (Bowling Green/Bowling Green), Rachel Hsckenberg and
Alex VanGundy (Powell/Olentangy Liberty) each had 10 kills for Marietta in the match.
Laura Mauer (Terre Haute, Ind./North) posted a match-high 37 assists and added 11 digs. Libero
Jen Braun (Chagrin Falls/Kenston) and
Mary Ervin (Lewis Center/Olentangy Orange) each had 12 digs. Braun also notched three service aces, while Mauer had two.
Marietta posted set scores of 25-22, 25-23, 27-29, 19-25 and 15-12 against Hiram. The Pioneers had a chance for a three-set sweep with a 27-26 lead in the third set. However, the Terriers responded with three straight points to take the set. Hiram won the fourth set as well forcing the fifth, and deciding, set.
The final set featured eight ties and neither team led by more than one point until the Pioneers took a 14-12 lead.
VanGundy paced the Marietta attack with 19 kills. She added three blocks and eight digs to earn All-Tournament honors. DeVriendt and Hackenberg chipped in with 16 and 14 kills, respectively.
Mauer dished out 57 assists and Braun anchored the defense with 15 digs. Mauer and Ervin, along with
Brittney Merritt (Akron/Copley), each had 10 digs in the match.
Hiram's Ariel Pund earned All-Tournament honors after recording a match-high 27 kills and a .414 attack percentage.
Marietta opens Ohio Athletic Conference play on Wednesday (Sept. 19) with a 7 p.m. match at John Carroll University.
