Capital edges Football 13-7

COLUMBUS, Ohio – Capital University scored 10 second half points to defeat Marietta College 13-7 Saturday (Sept. 15) afternoon in Ohio Athletic Conference football action. The Pioneers fall to 0-2 overall and 0-1 in the OAC. Capital is 1-1 on the season and 1-0 in league play. [Photo Gallery]

The first half has was battle between the two defenses. Capital managed the only points of the half on a 33-yard field goal by Travis Bosanac. The Crusader drive started at the 50-yard line after Anthony Cicione intercepted a #Tom Fulton (Pittsburgh, Pa./Penn Hills)# pass.

Capital extended its lead to 10-0 with 7:43 left in the third quarter when Ryan Kremchek connected with Casey Meridieth on a 10-yard touchdown pass. The scoring strike capped a six-play, 61-yard drive.

With the offense struggling, the Pioneers turned to their defense to make a big play. With Capital marching toward another score senior defensive back #Louis DiPaolo (Bridgeville, Pa./Bishop Canevin)# picked off a Kremchek pass and returned it 91-yards for a Marietta Touchdown. Freshman #Conor Durina (Poland/Cardinal Mooney)# hit the extra point to cut the lead to 10-7.

The Crusaders dominated the ball in the second half keeping possession for over 22 minutes. Bosanac hit a 45-yard field goal with 3:16 remaining in the game giving Capital a 13-7 lead.

Capital amassed 344 yards of offense including 222 yards on the ground. Bo Hardy carried the ball 36 times for 197 yards rushing. Kremchek completed 12-of-25 passes for 122 yards and a touchdown.

The Pioneers were held to just 88 yards of total offense. Senior running back #Alexander Fountain (Live Oak, Fla./Suwannee)# gained 45 yards on eight carries. Fulton and freshman #Thomas Hinkle (Fredericktown, Ohio/Fredericktown)# combined to complete only 3-of-12 passes for 30 yards.

Linebackers #Jake Hammer (Wadsworth/St. Vincent-St. Mary)# and #Nick Thompson (Lancaster, Ohio/Lancaster)# led the Marietta defense with 14 and 10 tackles, respectively. Hammer made 11 solo stops, while Thompson had nine.

Marietta returns home next week to face No. 2-ranked Mount Union. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. for the annual Youth Football Day event.
