West Liberty defeats Volleyball in five sets

Box Score MARIETTA, Ohio – The Marietta College volleyball team dropped a five-set thriller to West Liberty University Tuesday (Sept. 11) evening. The set scores were 25-23, 19-25, 21-25, 25-23 and 16-14. The Pioneers are now 7-3 overall, while the Hilltoppers improve to 4-5.

Rachel Hackenberg (Canal Winchester/Franklin Heights) led the Marietta attack with 16 kills. Paige DeVriendt (Bowling Green/Bowling Green) had 13 kills and Devin Walter (Indianapolis, Ind./Southport) added nine. Kathryn Hanssen and Keri Horton (Westland, Mich./Wayne Memorial) each chipped in with seven kills.

Laure Mauer and Jen Braun (Chagrin Falls/Kenston) posted match-highs in assists and digs with 57 and 36, respectively. Mauer added 14 digs, while Mary Ervin (Lewis Center/Olentangy Orange) and Brittney Merritt (Akron/Copley) each notched 12.

Chloe Janson (Lawrenceburg, Ind./East Central) blocked three Hilltopper attacks. DeVriendt, Hackenberg and Horton each posted a pair of blocks.

Marietta hosts the Pioneer Classic this weekend. The Pioneers play Trine University on Friday (Sept. 14) at 8 p.m. Marietta plays Adrian College and Hiram College on Saturday at 12:30 p.m. and 2:30 p.m.
