Baseball ties school record in victory over Saint Vincent

MARIETTA, Ohio – The No. 1 ranked Marietta College Pioneers tied a school record with 11 doubles in their 15-2 win over Saint Vincent College Thursday (April 26) evening. The Etta Express improves to 27-5 on the season, while the Bearcats fall to 20-14 overall. [Box Score]

This was the third time in program history that the Pioneers recorded 11 doubles in a game. The first was against Muskingum in 1999 and the last was in 2009 against Baldwin-Wallace.

After a scoreless first inning, Marietta scored three runs in the second and added seven more in the third to take control of the game. Sophomore catcher #Josh Ungerbuehler (Cincinnati/Roger Bacon)#, sophomore left fielder #Matt Moormeier (Chesterland/Notre Dame-Cathedral Latin)# and junior right fielder #Jordan Grilliot (Brookville/Northmont)# each drove in a run in the second.

The Pioneers sent 11 hitters to the plate in the third inning. Marietta collected eight base hits including six doubles during the rally. Senior shortstop #Tim Saunders (Alliance/Alliance)# led off the inning with a single through the left side of the infield.  Junior center fielder #Aaron Hopper (Wheelersburg/Wheelersburg)# blasted one over the right field fence for his third home run of the season.

Junior first baseman #Evan Brockmeier# doubled down the right field line. Following a pop up for the second out of the inning, five straight Pioneers doubled pushing the Marietta lead to 10-0. Junior third baseman #Bryan Gregorich (Chardon/Chardon)#, Moormeier, Grilliot, senior second baeman #Kirby Becker (South Euclid/St. Ignatius)# and Saunders doubled in consecutive at bats.

Saint Vincent kept the pressure on Marietta leaving the bases loaded in the first and third innings and stranding two runners in the second.

Junior #Michael Mulvey# (4-0) started on the mound for Marietta. After laboring through the first three innings, Mulvey settled down. He tossed 5.2 innings and gave up one earned run on five hits with six walks and five strikeouts.

Junior #Luke Langdon (Troy/Troy)# and senior #Kyle Lindquist (Columbus/Worthington Kilbourne)# both threw in relief for the Pioneers. Langdon went 2.1 innings and allowed one unearned run without surrendering a base hit. He walked one. Lindquist pitched a perfect ninth striking out two.

Moormeier added an RBI double in the fourth as Marietta plated two more runs and extended its lead to 12-0.

Saint Vincent got on the board with a run in the sixth. Designated hitter Grant Krally started the inning with a double down the left field line. Third baseman Nick Beamenderfer plated Krally with a single to left.

Doubles by Brockmeier and junior #Braden Park (Oxford/Talawanda)# in the bottom of the sixth resulted in three more Pioneer runs and tied the school record for doubles in a game.

The Bearcats added an unearned run in the eighth to make the score 15-2.

Jeremy Mains (4-4) started for the Bearcats and took the loss. Mains was charged with nine runs, six earned, on 10 hits with a walk in 2.2 innings of work. Three other Bearcats took the mound for Saint Vincent.

Marietta collected a season-high 22 base hits as six Pioneers had multiple hits in the game. Brockmeier led the way going 5-for-5 with two doubles and four runs scored. Grilliot, Saunders and Moormeier each had two doubles in the game.

The Pioneers travel to Berea on Saturday (April 28) for a key Ohio Athletic Conference doubleheader at Baldwin-Wallace College. First pitch is slated for 1 p.m.
