Etta Express blanks Ohio Wesleyan

DELAWARE, Ohio – The No. 2 ranked Marietta College baseball team posted its second straight shutout victory Tuesday (March 27) afternoon. The Pioneers defeated Ohio Wesleyan University 2-0 to improve to 11-3 on the season. The Battling Bishops fall to 10-8 overall. [Box Score]

Junior third baseman #Bryan Gregorich (Chardon/Chardon)# drove in #Evan Brockmeier# with a single down the right field line in the second inning to give the Pioneers a 1-0 lead. Brockmeier reached on a single and stole second to set the stage for Gregorich.

Gregorich scored Marietta's other run of the game in the sixth inning. With one out, Gregorich was hit by a pitch. He came round to score on a double to the right-center gap off the bat of #Jordan Grilliot (Brookville/Northmont)#.

Two runs was more than enough for the Pioneer pitching staff. Senior #Austin Blaski (Pandora/Gilboa)# (3-1) started the game and picked up the win, his third of the season. Blaski pitched seven dominating innings. He allowed just three hits and struck out nine.

Senior #Kyle Lindquist (Columbus/Worthington Kilbourne)# made his first appearance of the season and picked up right where he left off last May. Lindquist, who set the Marietta College save record last year with 12, threw the last two innings to earn the save. Lindquist faced the minimum six hitters.

Ohio Wesleyan's pitchers had a strong showing as well. Brandon Sega (1-2) started and got tagged with the loss after giving up one run on five hits in five innings of work. He walked three and struck out five.

Billy Cooper and Andrew Parise each pitched two innings of relief. Cooper gave up one run on two hits with a strike out. Parise allowed four hits and struck out one.

The Bishops' best scoring opportunity came in the bottom of the fourth inning. Second baseman Zach Bott and first baseman Tim Knexovich both singled to start the inning. Blaski struck out designated hitter Nathan Strome and then got centerfielder Seth Frentsos to ground into an inning-ending double play.

Marietta threatened several times in the game but stranded 13 runners on base. The Pioneers collected 11 base hits. Brockmeier and seniors #Kirby Becker (South Euclid/St. Ignatius)# and #Tim Saunders (Alliance/Alliance)# each had two hits in the game.

For the second consecutive game, the Pioneers' did not allow an opposing base runner to reach third base.

The Pioneers return home tomorrow (March 28) for a 4:30 p.m. game against Frostburg State University.
