CINCINNATI, Ohio – Marietta College defeated the College of Mount St. Joseph by the score of 59-44 Saturday (Nov. 17) in women's basketball action. The Pioneers scored 26 points off of Lion turnovers to improve to 2-0 overall on the young season.
Despite cold shooting in the first half, Marietta took a 25-16 lead at halftime. The Pioneers hit just 9-of-34 shot attempts (26.5%) in the period but took advantage of 13 Mount turnovers to claim the lead.
The Lions cut the lead to four points, 25-21 and 27-23, early in the second half only to see Marietta go on an 11-0 run. #
Tori Dixon (Londonderry/Vinton County)# capped the run with a three-pointer to make it 38-23 with 13:37 left in the game.
Mount St. Joseph cut the lead to nine on two occasions, the last coming with 6:39 remaining. The Pioneers responded with points on the following possession each time. All-tournament selection #
Heather Booth (Newport/Frontier)# answered the second challenge with a pair of free throws.
Booth just missed a double-double with 11 points and nine rebounds. #
Sierra Sigman (Chillicothe/Zane Trace)# also tallied 11 points, while Dixon finished with 10. #
Lindsay Deemer (Pittsburgh, Pa./Plum)# dominated the glass with a game-high 10 boards.
Heidi McManus led the Lions with 12 points. She was named to the all-tournament team. Rachel Blevins chipped in with 10 points and eight rebounds.
Marietta shot 35.6% (21-of-59) from the floor, 41.2% (7-of-17) from the three and 55.6% (10-of-18) at the charity stripe.
Mount St. Joseph was 15-of-42 (35.7%) from the floor, 0-for-10 (0%) on three-pointers and 14-of-26 (53.8%) at the line. The Lions also committed 26 turnovers in the game.
Marietta hosts the 28th annual Jim Meagle Turkey Shoot Saturday and Sunday, November 24-25. The Pioneers play Earlham College (Ind.) at 8:00 p.m. on Saturday and Daemen College (N.Y.) on Sunday at 3:00 p.m. Fans can catch the action live at
