Ohio Northern defeats Football on Homecoming Weekend

MARIETTA, Ohio – Ohio Northern University scored early and often en route to a 56-14 victory over Marietta College on Saturday (Oct. 13) afternoon. Ohio Northern's Devon Price returned the opening kickoff 70 yards to the Marietta 16-yard line. Three straight carries by Carter Paul gave the Polar Bears an early 7-0 lead.

The Polar Bears mounted a 11-play, 67-yard drive to go ahead 14-0 with 6:21 left in the first quarter. Tate Humphrey capped the drive with a 3-yard touchdown run.

Marietta responded with a 12-play drive that stalled on the Polar Bear 15-yard line. #Conor Durina (Poland/Cardinal Mooney)# attempted a 32-yard field goal that was blocked by Austin Griffin.

Ohio Northern put the ball in play from its own 20-yard line. After a pair of rushes that netted 25 yards, Humphrey connected with Justin Wilson on a 55-yard touchdown pass giving the Polar Bears a 21-0 lead.

Following a three and out by the Pioneers, Paul ran for 13 yards and a first down. On the next play Humphrey went back to the air and hit Devon Price on a 75-yard touchdown pass and a 28-0 lead.

Marietta got on the scoreboard on its next possession. Quarterback #Tom Fulton (Pittsburgh, Pa./Penn Hills)# rushed for nine yards on first down and then connected with #Kirby Harris (Greenville, S.C./South Side)# for four yards.

A pass interference call against the Polar Bears gave the Pioneers a first down on the Ohio Northern 48-yard line. Fulton hooked up with #Linard Williams (Canoga Park, Calif./El Camino Real)# on a 48-yard scoring strike with 13:24 left in the half.

Marietta's momentum was short-lived as the Polar Bears answered with a nine-play scoring drive that covered 62 yards. Paul dove in from two yards for the score. Paul added another touchdown before halftime to give Ohio Northern a commanding 42-7 lead at the break.

Paul finished then day with 121 yards rushing on 23 carries with three touchdowns. Humphrey completed 14-of-21 passes for 271 yards and three scores.

The Pioneers put together a 12-play, 61-yard scoring drive in the third quarter. Fulton hit Harris from six yards out for the score.

Fulton threw for 290 yards and two touchdowns for the Pioneers. He completed 25-of-55 passes and was intercepted three times. #Tevin Dones (Antioch, Calif./Antioch)# carried the ball 12 times for 57 yards, while Harris caught nine passes for 120 yards and a touchdown.
