Junior guard
Jacob Owens (Mansfield/Mansfield) continued the hot shooting streak he found in Michigan by draining 7-of-8 from behind the arc to lead the Pioneers with 21 points.
Senior wing
Trevor Halter (Malvern/Malvern) scored 12 off the bench while sophomore guard
Tyler Hammond (Cleveland/St. Ignatius) added 11 points with four assists and two steals. Junior guard
Tyler Worstell (Prospect/Franklin Heights) chipped in with 10 points on the afternoon.
Marietta came out on fire from beginning to end in its return to OAC play. Through the first ten minutes of play, Marietta held a 28-9 advantage aided by two of Owens' seven treys. A layup at the first half buzzer from senior center
Conner Kilpatrick (Bowling Green/Bowling Green) gave Marietta a 51-29 advantage at the break.
The Pioneer lead ballooned to as many as 30 points in the second half as Marietta held the Student Princes in check on its way to the 99-78 victory.
Dane Givner led the way for the Student Princes with 21 points, five assists and five boards. Victor Fortkamp scored 14 points and Nate Davis chipped in with 10 points and four rebounds.
Marietta finished the game shooting 57.1% (36-of-63) from the field, 52.4% (11-of-21) from three and 80% (16-of-20) from the free throw line. Heidelberg shot 45.9% (28-of-61) from the field, 36% (9-of-25) from behind the arc and 76.5% (13-of-17) from the charity stripe.
Marietta held the edge on the boards with a 37-29 advantage and committed 14 turnovers to Heidelberg's 16. The Pioneer bench doubled up the Heidelberg bench 48-24.
The Pioneers are back in action on Wednesday (Jan. 11) night at Capital. Tip-off is slated for 7 p.m.
