Owens buzzer-beater lifts Marietta over Otterbein

Box Score MARIETTA, Ohio – Jacob Owens (Mansfield/Mansfield) picked the right time to catch fire. The junior has been streaky from behind the arc this season, but returned to his old form in a 64-61 victory over the Otterbein University Cardinals on Saturday (Jan. 28) afternoon. The victory was the fourth in a row for the Pioneers. [Box Score]

Owens scored 15 points on 5-of-6 shooting from downtown, hitting his last at the buzzer to give Marietta (13-6, 8-4 OAC) the victory. The shot came from the corner next to the student section off a great feed from sophomore guard Tyler Hammond (Cleveland/St. Ignatius).

Hammond took the inbounds from underneath his own basket with eight seconds left and raced the length of the court, only to find a wide-open Owens in the corner. When the shot went down, the Pio nation stormed the court in celebration with Owens and his teammates.

Otterbein (6-13, 3-9 OAC) was able to control the pace for much of the game, as it would lead throughout the whole first half and most of the second. The Cardinals led 27-26 at the intermission, which helped quiet a packed house at Ban Johnson.

The Cardinals slowly stretched its lead in the second half pushing the margin to 12, 43-31 with 13:31 to play in regulation. Marietta would not go away chipping at the lead until the Pioneers reclaimed the lead, 53-51, with 5:25 to go. The two teams traded one-point leads for the last five minutes of the game.

RaNeal Ewing was able to convert on his two free throw attempts to tie the game at 61-61 with eight seconds left on the second half clock, leading to the Owens three-pointer.

Senior post Kevin Knab (Lakewood/Lakewood) also scored a game-high 15 points and grabbed 10 boards in the win. Fellow senior post Conner Kilpatrick (Bowling Green/Bowling Green) chipped with eight points and three boards, while Hammond added four points with a game-high six assists.

Max Van Meter led Otterbein with 15 points and three rebounds. Tommy Waterwash scored 12 points off the bench while Ewing added nine.

Marietta finished the game shooting 42% (21-of-50) from the field, 34.8% (8-of-23) from behind the arc and 63.6% (14-of-22) from the free throw line.

Otterbein shot 45.8% (22-of-48) from the field, 43.8% (7-of-16) from three and 66.7% (10-of-15) from the charity stripe.

The Cardinals led in rebounding 32-27 but committed 17 turnovers to Marietta's 12. The game featured five ties and 17 lead changes.

The Pioneers return to action on Wednesday (Feb. 1) evening as Wilmington College comes to Ban Johnson Arena. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
