Pioneer Women down John Carroll 84-69

Box Score MARIETTA, Ohio – After dropping two straight one-point decisions in conference, Head Coach Jill Meiring's Pioneer women's basketball team rebounded with an 84-69 victory over the John Carroll University Blue Streaks Saturday (Jan. 14) afternoon inside Ban Johnson Arena. The win improves Marietta's record to 9-7 overall and 4-5 in the Ohio Athletic Conference. John Carroll falls to 6-9 overall and 3-6 in the OAC. [Box Score]

Junior post Aleisha Guiler (Lower Salem/Monroe Central) led five double-digit Pioneer scorers with 16 points and a game-high nine rebounds. Juniors Tori Dixon (Londonderry/Vinton County) and Kristeva Rowe each scored 13 points in the win. Dixon also dished out five assists while Rowe grabbed six boards.

Freshman post Heather Booth (Newport/Frontier) added 10 points with seven rebounds, and freshman guard Jessica Brogan (Cincinnati/Anderson) also scored 10 points with three assists.

The Pioneers never trailed in the game and led by as many as 23 points. Marietta gradually built a lead in the first half and took a 13-point lead, 38-25, into the locker room after Guiler got an offensive rebound and layup as time ran out in the opening period.

Melissa Spahar scored 18 points and grabbed eight boards to lead John Carroll. Hilary Liwosz scored 17 points and grabbed nine rebounds. Allison Lustig added 11 points with five assists.

It appeared that the Pioneers were going to run the Blue Streaks out of the gym as a jumper by Booth gave Marietta a 68-45 lead with nine minutes remaining. However, Guiler left the game with an ankle injury and John Carroll made a run to cut the lead back to 10 points, 76-66, with 1:17 left in the game.

John Carroll was forced to foul the Pioneers. Rowe hit four free throws and Brogan notched a pair in the final minute to give Marietta the victory.

Marietta finished the game shooting 39.7% (29-of-73) from the field, 23.1% (3-of-13) from three and 82.1% (23-of-28) from the free throw line.

John Carroll finished shot 35.2% (25-of-71) from the field, 15% (3-of-20) from behind the arch and 69.6% (16-of-23) from the free throw line.

Marietta held a commanding edge on the boards grabbing 61 to John Carroll's 38. Marietta committed 19 turnovers to John Carroll's 13. Marietta also dominated the paint scoring 44 of its 84 points in the lane compared to the John Carroll's 28.

The Pioneers will be back in action on Saturday (Jan. 21) afternoon on the road at Baldwin-Wallace. Tip-off is slated for 3 p.m.
