Capital downs Men's Basketball

Box Score COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Marietta College men's basketball team lost to Capital University by the score of 82-66 Wednesday (Jan. 11) in a key Ohio Athletic Conference road test. The Pioneers fall to 9-5 overall and 4-3 in the OAC. Capital moves to 8-6 on the season and 5-2 in league play. [Box Score]

After allowing an opening three-pointer, the Crusaders built an early 10-point lead with a 14-3 run to make the score 19-9 with 12:35 left in the first half. Capital increased their lead to 15 points, 28-13, on a three-pointer by Damon Dillard midway through the opening frame.

Marietta battled back scoring 19 straight points to take a 38-33 lead with 2:08 left in the half. The Pioneers took a 40-37 advantage into the locker room at halftime.

Jason Humphrey (Naples, Fla./Barron Collier) hit a jumper to start the second half for the Pioneers. Capital quickly responded with an 8-0 run to reclaim the lead, 45-42, just over two minutes into the half. They would retain the lead the rest of the way.

Second half field goal shooting would prove to be the difference in the game. The Pioneers shot a cold 32% (8-of-25), while Capital scorched the nets at nearly 61% (14-of-23).

A three-pointer from Michael Sommer extended Capital's lead back into double digits, 66-55, with 8:01 remaining. Marietta managed to cut the lead to six at the five minute mark only to see the Crusaders score the next seven points to secure the victory.

Humphrey led the Pioneers with 19 points and three steals. Senior Kevin Knab (Lakewood/Lakewood) added 12 points and a team-high six rebounds. Junior Jacob Owens (Mansfield/Mansfield) hit a pair of three-pointers and finished with 10 points, while sophomore Tyler Hammond (Cleveland/St. Ignatius) chipped in with eight points, all in the second half.

The Crusaders had four players in double figures led by Kelly Winter's game-high 22 points. Winter hit 9-of-15 shot attempts, grabbed five boards and dished out four assists. Sommer finished with 14 points, while Mitch Westerhide and Spencer Niekamp scored 12 and 11, respectively.

For the game, the Pioneers shot 40.4% (21-of-52) from the floor, 31.3% (5-of-16) from three-point range and 86.4% (19-of-22) from the charity stripe.

Capital was 28-of-52 (54.9%) from the floor, 9-of-15 (60.0%) from behind the arch, and 17-of-28 (60.7%) at the line.

Both teams committed 10 turnovers and Capital won the battle of the boards, 35-29.

Marietta travels to OAC front-runner John Carroll Saturday (Jan. 14) for a 2 p.m. tip-off.
