Purple Raiders Down Volleyball in Four Sets

ALLIANCE, Ohio – The Marietta College volleyball team couldn't overcome a slow start and lost an Ohio Athletic Conference match at Mount Union by the score of 3-1 (25-12, 25-15, 26-28, 27-25). With the loss, the Pioneers stand at 8-10 overall, 1-1 in league play. Mount Union moves to 15-4, 2-0. [Box Score]

The Pioneers had a negative hitting percentage in the first two sets and found themselves in a hole. Marietta fought back and took the third set 28-26. In the fourth set neither team led by more than two points. The Pioneers led 21-19, but Mount Union scored the next three points en route to the victory.

Sophomore middle blocker Kathryn Hanssen led the Pioneers with 11 kills. Junior right-side hitter Alex VanGundy (Powell/Olentangy Liberty) had nine kills and freshman middle blocker Natalie Lanham (Charleston, W.Va./George Washington) added eight. Freshman setter Laura Mauer (Terre Haute, Ind./North) recorded 37 assists, while junior libero Jen Braun (Chagrin Falls/Kenston) posted 14 digs and three service aces.

Marietta returns home to host Baldwin-Wallace College on Friday at 7:30 p.m.
