Volleyball Opens Conference Play with Sweep of John Carroll

MARIETTA, Ohio – The Marietta College volleyball team opened Ohio Athletic Conference play in grand style Friday night. The Pioneers swept John Carroll University by the score of 3-0 (25-22, 25-18, 25-10). The win ups Marietta's overall record to 7-8, 1-0 in the OAC. The Blue Streaks fall to 8-7, 0-1. “This was a great start to conference play for our team,” said head coach Ray Costa. “We were assertive in each area of the game, while limiting our errors at the same time. We played a great team game tonight.”

The first set was close the entire way.  The Pioneers jumped out to an early 7-3 lead. The Blue Streaks battled back to the tied the set at 11-11.  Neither team could open much of a lead as the score was tied six more times, including 22-22. Senior Alex Weissling (Dublin/Dublin Scioto) served the final three points for the Pioneers.

The second set was also close until Marietta pulled away at the end. A kill by John Carroll's Charlotte Sykora made the score 19-17in favor of the Pioneers. Marietta responded with four straight points to take a 23-17 lead and never looked back. The Pioneers rolled through the third set hitting .320 as a team to seal the victory.

Sophomore middle blocker Kathryn Hanssen led Marietta with nine kills and added three blocks. Sophomore outside hitter Paige DeVriendt (Bowling Green/Bowling Green) and junior right side hitter Alex VanGundy (Powell/Olentangy Liberty) each had eight kills. Freshman setter Laura Mauer (Terre Haute, Ind./North) had a match-high 29 assists and junior libero Jen Braun (Chagrin Falls/Kenston) recorded 17 digs. Weissling gave the Blue Streaks fits with her serve, notching five service aces.

The Pioneers play Washington and Lee (Va.) tomorrow at 11 a.m. and then finish the day with a 1:15 p.m. match against Geneva (Pa.).
