GAMBIER, Ohio – The Marietta College volleyball team lost to Hanover College (Ind.) by the score of 3-2 (21-25, 25-14, 19-25, 25-19, 15-9) and Transylvania University (Ky.) in straight sets (25-15, 28-26, 25-13). The Pioneers are now 6-8 overall.
Junior right side hitter
Alex VanGundy (Powell/Olentangy Liberty) had 12 kills against Hanover to lead the Pioneers' attack. Sophomore outside hitter
Paige DeVriendt (Bowling Green/Bowling Green) had 10 kills and sophomore middle blocker Kathryn Hanssen added eight kills and a team-high five blocks.
Freshman setter
Laura Mauer (Terre Haute, Ind./North) played a solid all-around match with 33 assists, three blocks and eight digs. Junior libero
Jen Braun (Chagrin Falls/Kenston) notched three service aces and 24 digs, while senior outside hitter
Alex Weissling (Dublin/Dublin Scioto) had 12 digs.
Against Transylvania, DeVriendt led the Pioneers with 11 kills. VanGundy had nine kills and seven digs. Senior
Meredith Storey (Olmsted Falls/Olmsted Falls) added four kills and four blocks.while freshman
Natalie Lanham (Charleston, W.Va./George Washington) recorded four blocks.
Mauer had a team-high 26 assists along with five digs. Braun anchored the defense with 12 digs. Freshman
Brittney Merritt (Akron/Copley) had eight digs and a service ace.
The Pioneers open Ohio Athletic Conference play on Friday, September 23rd when John Carroll comes to Fenton Court for a 7:30 p.m. battle.
