Heidelberg stays alive in Mideast Regional with 16-6 win

MARIETTA, Ohio — Andy Lowe, arguably Heidelberg's best pitcher, made his first appearance in the NCAA Division III Regional at just the right time.

Lowe pitched five innings of relief, allowing two hits and one run, as the Student Princes (36-12) advanced to the championship game with a 16-6 victory over Case Western Reserve Saturday afternoon at Don Schaly Stadium. [Box Score]

Lowe (5-1) almost got out of a bases-loaded jam in the fourth when he took over for starter Sylvester Nino. However, a Matt Richards sacrifice fly scored a run and then an error by Jason Lash allowed another run that staked Case (33-15) to a 5-2 lead.

Heidelberg's hitters, though, were too much for Case's depleted pitching staff.

The Student Princes scored in every inning from the fifth on, including five in the sixth and three each in the seventh and eighth.

Gar Keen, who went 3-for-5 with four RBI, a double and two runs led an attack that included at least one hit by every Heidelberg starter.

Lash added three hits, three RBI and a run, while Alex Monroe went 3-for-6 with three RBI and a run scored. Ricardo Lizcano went 2-for-3 with two RBI and three runs, and Derek Andrzejczak had two hits.

Richards went 2-for-3 with two RBI for Case, while Bobby Marko and Steve Bills each had two hits in the losing effort.

Heidelberg faces No. 1 Marietta at 3:45 p.m. Saturday in the championship game. If the Student Princes win a second championship will be played at 1 p.m. Sunday at Schaly Stadium.
